AWARDS PROGRAM

Each spring as part of our annual conference, we host an Awards banquet.  At this evening event, we present all of our professional and lay awards. 

Nomination materials for 2008 have been released.  All materials are due by February 27 to Awards committee chair, Gary Scott of West Des Moines Parks and Recreation Department.

Slate of Awards offered by IPRA:

Richard J. Slattery Professional Award

The highest professional award in the IPRA program.  The “professional” encompasses many traits.  To be considered for this award, the nominee should be a person who has given of themselves as they work with their clientele.  Their everyday life should exemplify outstanding, dedicated and unselfish service to the profession, community  and to this Association.  IPRA membership required. Committee comprised of the five most recent Slattery Award recipients.

Slattery Recipients This picture is of all former Richard J. Slattery Professional Award recipients including this year's person - Keith Abraham. Accompanying the group is Mrs. Susan Slattery-Branstetter. Mrs Slattery-Branstetter is the daughter of Mr. Slattery. This year marks the 30th anniversary of his untimely death.

 T. Ray Frame Award

The T. Ray Frame award is given to the outstanding maintenance person with a park and recreation department who has demonstrated a high level of skill in his/her work; goes beyond what would be considered adequate or expected in the position; shows a devotion on and off the job.  This is a “blue collar” award designed for an individual in a non-supervisory  or working supervisor position.  Membership not required and more than one award may be given.  2007 Recipient - Not Awarded

Claude Ahrens Community Service Award

Formerly known as Lay Person Award.  Recognizes a lay person outside of our profession who has provided support and contribution to the strengthening of programs and resources within their communities, area and state. Membership not required and more than one award may be given.  2007Recipient— Randall Family, Vinton; Sally Briggs, Cedar Rapids; Daniel Ford, Sioux City

 Corporate  Support Award

Designed to recognize a private commercial organization that has contributed to the leisure services profession and enhanced the quality of life within the community, county or state. Membership not required and multiple awards may be given. 2007  - Not Awarded

 Lay Organization Award

Recognizes a group of lay people outside of our profession who have support and contributed to the strengthening of programs and resources of leisure services by an outstanding contribution to the park, recreation and conservation movement within their communities, areas, county and state.  Membership not required and multiple awards may be given.  2007 Recipient - Sturgis Falls Celebration, Cedar Falls;  Sioux City Climbing Wall Committee

 Service Club Award of Excellence

 Any IPRA member in good standing may nominate candidates for each award.  The nominees may be endorsed by other members of the IPRA with the exception of Awards Committee members.  Awards Committee members may not nominate, sponsor or write letters of support for nominees.

All nominations are to follow the appropriate criteria listed in this brochure.  Nomination packets are due by February 27, 2008 to the committee chair Gary Scott

The nomination should be typewritten and include the appropriate information as stated for each award.  Nominations should include any supporting data, such as letters of support, copies of news releases, etc.  Each nomination must include the nomination cover sheet, as well as all applicable nomination criteria listed in this brochure.  (Available on IPRA website.)

Please note that nominees for the T. Ray Frame, Claude Ahrens Community Service, Corporate Support, Lay Organization and Service Club awards need not be members of IPRA;  however, they must be affiliated with a department or staff member that is an IPRA member.

Nomination Criteria

Please be sure to include items 1-5 under ALL AWARDS and also address pertinent information under the specific awards you are nominating.  Other information may be included as criteria for the nomination with the total packet not to exceed fifteen (15 ) pages.

 ALL AWARDS

1.         Statement of your reason for nomination—limit to 200-250 words

2.         Organization memberships, honors, awards or special accomplishments.

3.         Community Service—professional and volunteer, related and non-related to park and recreation.

4.         Contributions to parks and recreation field and dedication to the field.

5.         Additional pertinent information gain better picture of nominee.

6.        If possible, please include a CD-ROM with digital photographs of the person(s), project and/or event.

 RICHARD J. SLATTERY, DR. HANSON NEW PROFESSIONAL AND T. RAY FRAME AWARDS

1.         Professional work experience and length of service (which specifically bear on nominee’s qualifications).

2.         National, state and local professional park and recreation organization affiliations.

3.         Education and/or training.

4.         Characteristics which make the person outstanding:  ability to work, direct and train others;  ingenuity;  versatility within all areas of the field.

5.         One original and four copies of nomination packets should be provided to the Awards Committee chair.
